Lesson 1: Simplify Your Home Screen
Let’s clean up and simplify your Home Screen. Instead of icons, images and flashy colors — we’re going for a minimalist, text-only design. Follow the steps below to make your iPhone look like this:
Step 1: Download and save these backgrounds to your Photos album
Step 2: Download the Minimal Phone Launcher App
Step 3: Follow the set up process or watch this video to help get you set up.
This simple trick makes your phone instantly less tempting by putting it in black and white. Scrolling suddenly feels boring—in the best way—while you still keep access to the apps you actually love.
If having your phone in grayscale 24/7 feels like too much, watch this short video to learn how to automate it to go gray at night and back to color in the morning.
Lesson 2: Go Gray!
If you’re going for the full ‘Dumb Phone’ or ‘Palm Pilot’ experience, and want your phone in Black and White 24/7, skip to minute 5:30 in the video or follow the easy steps below:
Open your iPhone Settings
Use the search bar to find Color Filters
Toggle Color Filters ON
Select Grayscale
Turn Intensity all the way up
That’s it! Your phone will now stay in black and white 24/7.
Option 2: Mimic ‘Dumb Phone’ or ‘Flip Phone’ settings which means:
No internet browser
No distractible apps like YouTube or ChatGPT
No Social Media including Reddit, LinkedIn, Substack, etc
To put a complete block on all distractible apps, follow the steps below (see video for reference).
Tap + New App Group
Add all non-essential apps/websites (Instagram, YouTube, Safari, Chrome, ChatGPT, etc.).
Leave only essentials unblocked (Maps, Notes, Music, Banking Apps, Baby Monitors).
Select “Strict Block”
Set for all day
Skip the “Pause for” section.
Click Save.
Before moving on, go to your Main App Library and delete the apps you blocked (Instagram, Facebook, etc.). This way, even if you redownload an app, ScreenZen will still prevent access.
Keep in mind that some apps are not able to be deleted, such as Safari.
Set Up the ‘Lock Settings’ Timer
Open ScreenZen
Click Options (bottom middle) → Lock Settings Timer.
Start with 2–5 minutes to stop yourself from changing your settings.

Lesson 3: Block Distracting Apps
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to block distracting apps using the ScreenZen app — while keeping all the functions you love and depend on such as Maps, Music, Email, etc.
Tip: Do NOT follow the app set up guide. Follow the instructions in the video below.
Step 1: Download the ScreenZen App
Step 2: Allow Notifications & Skip Setup Wizard
Allowing notifications helps the App function properly.
Don’t follow the default setup. Just skip through and follow the settings below.
Step 3: Choose taper or cold turkey
Option 1: Start Slow With Day/Night Limits
If going Cold Turkey feels too intense, you can start by creating a limited scroll schedule for day, and a no-scroll schedule at night to ease yourself into it.
